How to pair devices?

What's the best way to have devices "pair" with each other in some persistent way?

Currently I'm using the alljoyn about interface to have a server send information about itself to a device running the client.

But are these devices "paired" in some kind of longterm way? Could I use the client to message the server?

What is the best way to implement it so these devices can sort of "stay in touch" over a long period of time. I guess I'm worried that the about announce features are kind of a one-time thing that "fires" once and then doesn't establish any persistent connection between the devices.

I know this question is a little broad but I would appreciate anyone taking the time to answer it and shed some light on how I can get devices to pair longterm.

Thanks
